Overview
A Trailblazer in Arizona Politics and Law
I recently made history as the first Black man to serve on Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs’s transition team, an experience that has further fueled my passion for advocacy and creating systemic change. As a lawyer, I strive to be a voice for the underrepresented, and this role has allowed me to extend my advocacy beyond the courtroom into the realms of public service and policy-making.
Additionally, I hold the distinction of being one of less than five Black lawyers in Arizona’s history to achieve an AV-rating, a testament to my dedication, professionalism, and the respect I have earned from my colleagues and clients. This recognition is not just a personal achievement but a stride towards greater representation for Black professionals in the Arizona legal community.
Expanding My Reach: Thoughts From An Arizona Black Lawyer Podcast
In line with my commitment to share voices and stories often overlooked, I am excited to introduce my new podcast, Thoughts From An Arizona Black Lawyer. This platform serves as a space where I can discuss pressing legal issues, share insights about personal injury law, and explore the intersections of race and justice in Phoenix and beyond. Through candid conversations and engaging storytelling, I aim to empower listeners with the knowledge they need to navigate their legal challenges while uplifting the African-American experience.
My Arizona Story: Roots and Experiences
Originally from Apple Valley, Minnesota, my journey led me to Arizona, where I’ve lived for over 14 years. My childhood was shaped by strong family values and a commitment to education, instilled in me by my parents, who met at Arizona State University and settled in Chandler. I now divide my time between Arizona and a suburb of Washington D.C. in Maryland, allowing me a broader perspective on regional issues and national advocacy.
I pursued my education diligently, earning a degree in Business from a college in Iowa, followed by a Master’s in Business Taxation and a law degree from the University of Southern California. With over 17 years of legal practice, I’ve had the privilege of handling personal injury cases across almost every county in Arizona, which includes taking and defending over 500 depositions and trying more than eight civil jury trials. My commitment to my clients has resulted in over $4 million in settlements and verdicts returned to those who have suffered due to accidents.
Why I Am Passionate About Representing African Americans in Arizona
My passion for law stems from recognizing the inequities faced by African Americans in our community, particularly in the legal system. Too often, I have heard from clients in Chandler and across Arizona who felt taken advantage of by lawyers who did not prioritize their needs. I’ve encountered numerous victims who, despite having private health insurance, found that their lawyers were sending them to networks that profited at their expense. This injustice drives me to fight harder for my clients, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their injuries.
At GAMESQ, PLC, my black-owned law firm, I am committed to providing top-notch legal representation to underserved populations in Arizona. Many African Americans relocating to our state struggle to find lawyers who understand their unique experiences and challenges. I aspire to fill this gap, creating an environment where everyone, regardless of race, can find high-quality legal representation.
Experience As a Foundation for Success
My academic and professional background strengthens my practice. Graduating from a top 20 law school and earning a Master’s in Business Taxation, I possess the knowledge and skills necessary to create settlements that maximize my clients’ financial recovery. I firmly believe that if it doesn’t make dollars, it doesn’t make sense, and I leverage my expertise to advocate effectively for my clients’ interests.
Conclusion
As I continue to pave the way for future generations of Black lawyers and advocates in Arizona, I remain dedicated to serving my clients with integrity and passion. Whether through my work as a personal injury attorney or my new podcast, Thoughts From An Arizona Black Lawyer, my goal is to empower and uplift the voices in our community while fighting for justice and fair representation.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about my journey! Let’s connect and explore ways to ensure everyone receives the legal support they deserve.
