Irvine Business & Commercial Law Firm
Overview
From our office in Irvine, we at the law firm of Gates, O'Doherty, Gonter & Guy L.L.P. represent clients throughout Orange County and Southern California in civil litigation involving personal injury, business disputes, estate administration and family law. With more than 120 years of combined litigation experience, our law firm is known for its unparalleled success in the courtroom.
Though our law firm was founded in 2001, our four partners have been dedicated trial attorneys since 1974, 1978, 1981 and 1985, respectively. We have collectively handled thousands of trials throughout Orange County, including approximately 400 trials conducted to verdict. With a verdict success rate of 96 percent, we are proud of the level of dedication and service we employ on behalf of our clients.
Our trial experience and skills are further illustrated by our involvement in the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Membership in the ABOTA is by invitation only and contingent upon extensive jury trial experience. Having demonstrated the principles of litigation skill, civility and integrity in their practice, four of our attorneys are selected members of the ABOTA. We continue to use their skills both in the courtroom and to train our remaining attorneys in excellence in civil litigation.
At the law firm of Gates, O'Doherty, Gonter & Guy L.L.P., we use our litigation skill and experience to achieve success as our clients define it. We put a premium on combining quality legal representation with personal service for each client who contacts us.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
