1.0 out of 5 stars

Sara was assigned to my divorce case at Butler Law in SD. She probably spent an equal amount of time writing invoices to bill me as she did doing literally anything on my case. I paid 11k in 4 months over a 19 month marriage with less than 60k in assets to split because she'd ask the court for an extension every possible opportunity she could while making zero progress with me to exclude going back and forth getting my hopes up over things that I now know are not reasonable outcomes in the eyes of the court. I didn't find out about high fee arbitration until after a year had already passed so I could no longer contest the amount they charged me but I'm not joking, I think I actually paid $11,000+ to have Sara file 4 documents with the court and quite literally not do anything else. In the end my ex and I fired our attorneys (after giving them ~30% of our net worth) and went and did it on our own at the court house. Predatory is how I'd describe Sara.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
