Katelin Maatz is an Associate Attorney in San Francisco with a practice focus on environmental law, regulatory compliance, risk management, and related litigation support. She brings valuable experience from both public agency roles and private sector legal externships, where she developed a strong foundation in environmental policy, statutory analysis, and labor and employment compliance.
Prior to joining GHB, Katelin served as a legal extern at Recology, where she researched and drafted legal memoranda addressing compliance, environmental regulations, risk management, and labor and employment issues. Her prior public agency experience includes roles with the California Department of Justice - Environment and Natural Resources Division, where she researched civil cases and environmental investigations and drafted a comprehensive guide on public nuisance law, and the California Public Utilities Commission, where she authored a memorandum on a statute of first impression relating to eminent domain and analyzed the application of CEQA to a telecommunications project.
Katelin also has hands-on litigation support experience from her work as a paralegal and legal intern, drafting pleadings, briefs, and discovery documents for civil and bankruptcy matters. As a judicial intern for the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board, she drafted initial decisions and memoranda for administrative law judges and participated in hearings and pre-hearing strategy meetings.
During law school, Katelin graduated cum laude from University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings) in May 2025 with a concentration in Environmental Law. While in law school, she served as a Senior Development Editor for the UC Law Environmental Journal and interned with multiple government agencies.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
