Please pay attention to my Review. I got out of jail a few months ago and Michael Holmes is a main reason I ended up in jail. I didn't receive any representation whatsoever, fired him in open court when it came to the preliminary hearing and lost $25,000 in the process. He promised me consultations and certain defenses after I paid him $25,000 retainer. As the weeks and months passed I tried contacting him several times and the few times I got hold of him he told me what the defenses were and we would have a meeting. Over the phone I brought up to him my own evidence I discovered that strengthened my case and said we would be meeting. No meetings ever happened, no defenses whatsoever were ever brought up and in August 2019 when I showed up to the preliminary hearing all he could give me was the prosecutions "offer" of one year in jail and tried convincing me this was the best option. I told him he gave me no meeting and came with no defenses. My case was absolutely ridiculous be he obviously was conceding to the prosecutor and gave me no hope whatsoever. And, worst of all after I fired him at that hearing in open court. I began asking for my money back. He gave me ridiculous answers of how he spent it all in his "preparation" of which he did absolutely nothing.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
