5.0 out of 5 stars

Jeffrey Hersh was assigned to me as a public defender after I managed to procrastinate to pay a dozen expired registration tickets, failed to stick the registration sticker to the window and got several tickets for that, missed the car inspection renewal, missed the tickets in the mail for it, got my vehicle registration suspended, and got stopped by police who watched me driving through a gas station to skip waiting (for a right turn!) on a red light (I was sure it was legal but unlikely would have been able to convincingly explain it to the judge). I also completely missed the email sent to me by Sofia from Jeffrey Hersh's office, but thankfully she called me and explained that I have a defender. At that point, I was desperately trying to find an attorney who would agree to represent me in court on short notice, so you can imagine my relief. I was panicking, I had no idea what I should or should not be doing, had absolutely zero time or energy for all this (as a working single parent with moderate ADHD), and would have failed all and every deadline if not for the attorney's office being extremely clear, supportive, timely, and handling everything without me doing anything apart from showing up at the hearing and finally paying those tickets in judgment after Mr. Hersh negotiated a decent time extension for me to do that. The hearing left me with a very reasonable court fee, no penalty points on my driving record, no jail time (also being on the table at the beginning I think), or record of being anything other than a major procrastinator of paperwork (don't know and don't want to know what it's called, misdemeanor or whatever else)

I contacted Jeff's office for issue that I had with a traffic ticket (with points) I got. He fought for me and was able to get the points removed, and the ticket reduced! I couldn't be happier! Thank you so much Jeff for everything!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
