Overview

Steven L. Nichols has been involved with all aspects of intellectual property for nearly 25 years. He has served as a patent examiner, registered patent attorney and law school professor. Steven has published articles and presented on various eCommerce and intellectual property topics in Paris, Tokyo and throughout the United States. Steven also enjoys skiing and mountain biking.

Steven entered the intellectual property field as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. As an examiner, Steven handled hundreds of patent applications related to light detectors with associated optics and circuitry. These inventions covered a wide range of electrical fields including imaging arrays and image intensifiers, fiber optic communications, photocopiers and fax machines, auto-focus cameras, product inspection systems, intruder detection systems, and missile tracking systems.

After two years at the Patent Office, Steven entered private practice, first as a patent agent and then as a registered patent attorney. Steve’s practice has covered all areas of intellectual property law with an emphasis on drafting and prosecuting patent and trademark applications for major corporate clients. Steven prosecutes patents in the electrical and mechanical arts, including software and business method patents. Steven also handles eCommerce and Internet legal issues, intellectual property licensing and litigation.

Currently, Steven serves as an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University. Steven developed the curriculum for a course he teaches at the Fulton College of Engineering & Technology entitled “Fundamentals of Intellectual Property for Engineers.” Steven has also taught eCommerce and Internet Law at the J. Rueben Clark Law School at BYU. Steven also developed the curriculum for this course which includes all aspects of legal practice relating to the internet including jurisdiction, intellectual property, electronic contracting and ethics.

Steven holds a Bachelor of Science degree cum laude in Applied Physics from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and a Juris Doctor degree with High Honors from the George Mason University School of Law in Arlington, Virginia. Steven is an admitted attorney in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Utah.
