** Select Your Lawyer Carefully **
It is not always easy to know whether a lawyer is going to do a good job for you, but there are a few ways to make an educated decision.
First, compare Google Reviews. The number and quality of reviews can provide helpful insight. If a law firm has multiple negative reviews, especially if the reviews are specific about what the lawyer did wrong, that is a red flag.
Second, meet with the lawyer in-person. Meeting over the phone or zoom is convenient, and we offer that, but going to a lawyer's office will tell you a lot about them. You should be able to schedule an appointment within two business days and meet the lawyer at their office. If they cannot fit you in or do not have their own building for meetings, those are red flags. When you arrive at the law firm, pay attention to the sign and office organization. The bigger and nicer the sign, the more invested the firm is in helping clients in Bloomington-Normal. If the law firm has not invested in a nice sign, this is a subtle indicator that they may be an out-of-town lawyer splitting time between multiple locations or may not even have a local office. Unfortunately, this happens more often than people realize. Also, you want a lawyer who is organized. Some paperwork is expected, but if the law firm has lots of visible papers that seem untidy, that is a red flag.
Third, trust your instincts. If the lawyer you meet with seems knowledgeable, takes an interest in your case, and has a calm and confident demeanor, you are probably in good hands.
