Overview
Brian Stempien is the newest member of the Travis Herbert & Stempien, PLLC team. Since joining the firm, he has hit the ground running, leading numerous cases to favorable resolution and successfully arguing complicated issues with significant importance for Kentucky insurance law.
For eight and a half years prior to attending law school, Brian served as an Officer and Attack Helicopter Pilot in the United States Marine Corps. During this time, Brian excelled as a pilot and flight instructor, graduating at the top of his class in flight school and earning various distinctions and awards for his leadership, instructional abilities, and combat experience. While on active duty in the Marine Corps, Brian completed three overseas deployments, including two deployments, in 2004 and 2006, to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II. At the prompting of his lovely wife, Brian left active duty after the birth of their first child to pursue the law, and remains an active member of the USMC Reserve, having achieved the rank of Major in 2009.
Brian grew up in Connecticut, and completed his undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University, receiving a Bachelor's of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering in 1999 and entering the Marine Corps upon graduation. After leaving active duty, Brian received his law degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville graduating summa cum laude. While in law school, Brian was a member of the most successful National Moot Court Team in school history, an editor on the Law Review, served as a student member of the Brandeis Inn of Court, and spent a year teaching Constitutional law to seniors at Louisville's Central High School.
When he has free time, Brian enjoys all types of physical activity, wood working, and working on his home. Currently, Brian is CrossFit certified and has completed a half-ironman, marathon, and several smaller races.
Brian is currently married to a Louisville native and has three children, with the newest little one having arrived in April of 2011.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
