Metairie Family Law Lawyer

Overview

Scott Buhrer is a long time resident of Kenner, Louisiana. He attended Tulane University where he received a B.A. in political science (1982), his law degree (1986) and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) (1995). After law school, Mr. Buhrer worked briefly at a large, downtown law firm. Mr. Buhrer subsequently served for three (3) years as an Assistant City Attorney in New Orleans while also employed with an established family law firm where he obtained his training in this specialized area of the law from one of the then foremost experts in the field.

A seasoned trial attorney and negotiator, Mr. Buhrer brings over 24 years experience to every family law and succession matter he handles. Clients can count on his perspective and understanding to guide them effectively through the legal process and arrive at a successful resolution of their legal problems. Mr. Buhrer has worked on literally hundreds of cases in the family law and succession areas during his career, ranging from simple, non-contested matters to extremely complex and highly contentious cases. As a sole practitioner, he personally handles every aspect of each case and keeps clients informed every step of the way.

In recognition of his legal knowledge and experience and his reputation amongst Judges and other lawyers, Mr. Buhrer is frequently appointed by family law Judges in Jefferson, St. Tammany and Orleans Parishes to serve as Special Master in difficult and complex family law matters. In that capacity, he makes formal recommendations to the Trial Judge, which if not objected to, become the ruling of the Court. Only a select few family law practitioners are appointed to this important position.

Mr. Buhrer also maintains the highest possible AV Preeminent peer review rating by Martindale Hubbell and has been named a Top Lawyer in the area of Family Law by New Orleans Magazine.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
