Hired Attorney 2024Attorney Loyd Hopkins Review Rockville Maryland Attorney Retainer & Court filing Fees fraud/Scam, Tried to be little me by telling me an African American woman that white women are smart as if black women aren't. Took my money and did not do what he agreed to do. Told me to send $495 court filing fees he was filing that day but never did, but kept the money. Now he's refusing to give me all my money back. Told me he would lie if I sue him by filing a counter suit for FRAUD, which I have never in my life committed FRAUD. Tried to scare and bully me not to sue him for my retainer or write a review. Convinced me to hire him by saying that he's connected to all the judges in Maryland Federal Court and we would stand a better chance with him filing in Maryland instead of Washington DC Federal Court. Tried to convince me to hire him and give him retainer money by stating no attorney in Maryland would not take my case because it's a big difficult case and that he's not judgemental. He said this as if all the other attorneys in Maryland are. Attorney Loyd is unethical, he tried to convince me to fire an attorney in Milwaukee WI that I hired over my brothers estate case and then hire him. He wanted me to give him $5000 upfront to just look for an attorney in Wisconsin that he can hire and work with on that case. He's not licensed in Wisconsin. When I arrived at his office on 11/22/2024 he did not come upfront when I entered into his office, he spoke to me from the back area and told me to come back there before coming upfront to meet me. I had to follow the sound of his voice to the back area, and when I got back there I noticed he's wheelchair bound. There's nothing bad about him being in a wheelchair, I just wasn't expecting it. Then after I paid him $5000 upfront he told me he could easily defend the defendants with my complaint and win against me. I was shocked this was an attorney that was representing me saying this to me. This man should not be practicing LAW.

Consulted Attorney 2023I called him regarding counsel for divorce, and he turned around and called my husband's family to discuss. HOW HORRIBLE IS THAT! And, he never even called me to discuss. Needless to say, I moved forward with other counsel. HE HAS NO ETHICS!!!

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
