Attorney Information

Overview

Nick was born and raised in Grand Rapids, and his first job was as a caddy at Cascade Hills Country Club. He attended Aquinas College, where he studied America History and graduated summa cum laude. Nick also ran track and field at Aquinas College for four years, earning multiple All-American and Academic-All America honors, as well as setting school records in the hammer throw and 35lb weight throw. While in law school, Nick served on Law Review as a Senior Associate Editor and later obtained a prestigious internship with the Michigan Supreme Court, working for the much-honored Justice Elizabeth Weaver. Upon graduating from Law School, Nick clerked for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Diane Hathaway, and then worked for the Michigan Court of Appeals as a research attorney. Nick has worked with Genie since 2013, and he was named one of Michigan Lawyers Weekly's Up and Coming Lawyers in 2014, and has been named a Rising Star by Super Lawyers each year since 2020. He is an especially keen brief writer and quite skilled at legal research. He went to law school knowing that he wanted to work on the side of plaintiffs, and is delighted that he is able to do that in his own hometown in West Michigan. He has a lovely wife and two young daughters who occupy his time away from the law.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
