Hopkins Civil Litigation Lawyer

Overview

Courtney Carter is an associate who practices in litigation and ERISA and disability rights cases. She has represented plaintiffs and defendants, individuals, businesses, and governmental entities, in a variety of civil disputes. Courtney can advise clients on their best course of action-which may or may not be litigation-in an effort to achieve the best outcome for that individual client. If a dispute requires litigation, her range of experience should reassure the client that they are in capable hands.

Courtney's passion is for litigation and she has the trial skills to effectively represent her clients in court. She sees her role as an attorney as that of a counselor, listening, learning, and understanding from each client what their needs and goals are, and knowing that no two matters are exactly the same.

Courtney has experience in class-action plaintiffs' representation and defense, privacy and data breach matters, internal investigations, antitrust claims, Indian law, ERISA, and other disability and insurance rights matters.

Before law school, Courtney worked as a teacher through Teach for America in the Rio Grande Valley. She serves on the board of a charter school in northeast Minneapolis, Northeast College Prep, and serves on the Board of Directors of a nonprofit serving motherless women and girls, She Climbs Mountains. She taught legal writing at Mitchell Hamline School of Law as an adjunct professor from 2015 to 2020. She lives in Eden Prairie with her husband and two young daughters.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
