North Kansas City Family Law and Wills & Estates Law Firm
Overview
The Law Firm of Barbara E. Hecht, P.C.-North Kansas City, Missouri
Family Law & Divorce ∙ Wills & Estates ∙ Criminal Law ∙ Bankruptcy
My name is Barbara Hecht. I am an attorney, and I have been practicing law throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area and surrounding portions of both Kansas and Missouri for more than 40 years now. As a result, my law firm has become a trusted resource for both individuals and referring attorneys who have clients with legal needs involving:
- Family law-I handle a comprehensive range of issues, including divorce, paternity, marital agreements, name changes, legal separations, child custody, visitation, child and spousal support (alimony), property and debt division, modification and enforcement of judgments, grandparents’ rights, domestic partnerships and unique issues faced by same-sex couples and other members of the LGBT community. I also have extensive experience with domestic violence cases and protection orders, representing individuals on both sides of the aisle.
I focus on helping clients who are trying to create a new and better future. I have also been an advocate of mediated solutions in family law cases throughout my career and have been using the collaborative law approach to achieve those ends for the better part of a decade.
- Wills and estates-I help clients with wills, trusts, powers of attorney, living wills, testamentary trusts, beneficiary deeds and other matters of estate planning, including guardianships of minors and disabled adults.
- Criminal law-I represent adults and juveniles in municipal court proceedings such as traffic tickets, protection orders, ordinance violations and in criminal court cases.
- Bankruptcy and debt collection defense-I help clients navigate the Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy processes, stop creditor harassment and take legal action against abusive debt collectors for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
In addition to these practice areas, I offer effective, affordable legal services for residential and commercial real estate transactions and a wide range of general business needs.
Working Together
I work with each client as a partner, taking his or her capabilities, time requirements and personal needs into account. I take my responsibilities as an advocate very seriously and make great efforts to stay current with changes in the law that have the potential to affect my clients. I am also constantly looking for ways to improve the way I provide services to my clients and the resources I use to do that.
On a more personal level, I do my best to make people feel comfortable, informed and confident. I listen, explain and answer client concerns before they leave my office. I also try to make certain that our time together is free from interruptions. Throughout the process, I take pride in being accessible, responding promptly to phone calls and e-mails and in keeping clients informed as to their cases, which includes sending clients regular itemized billings and copies of communications related to their case.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
