We encountered a sudden health event with an elderly parent whose affairs were not in order. The situation required someone familiar with both New York and New Jersey elderly law. Several attorneys were interviewed but none of them were as forthcoming as Marize Helmy. Even before retaining her services, she saw that were we in a difficult situation and offered us answers before we hired her. This was not the experience with all of the other attorneys who refused to provide some simple answers without a fully executed contract, and in our case, those answers would have a big impact on if were to have taken actions in New York or New Jersey. After contracting her services, over the following months, we were able to settle and simplify our elderly parent's affairs and land our parent in a good place. I highly recommend Marize Helmy and her team. She provided expert guidance and was considerate and compassionate throughout a very challenging time for our family.

We shoulda gone to Marize Helmy first! Here's why... In a recent 60 minute consult, my sister and I received a MASTERCLASS in... Estate planning... Tax... Why Medicare works better in NJ... Why NY Medicare is simply awful... Trusts (revocable v. irrevocable, when it matters, and, just as important, when it DOESN'T matter)... TDA's and the medical tax exemption NO ONE ELSE TOLD US ABOUT... Veteran's benefits for care costs... And why Marize's Mom and Dad wanted her to go to medical school... But fortunately for you, she went to law school instead! Seriously- had we had Marize on our team when our Mom first needed care, not only would she probably have ended up in a better facility... Our family might have saved 100's of 1000's of dollars. So don't make our mistake! If you live in the NY/ NJ area, give Marize a call and make that appointment. You'll be glad you did.

With my siblings and I vetting potential elder care lawyers on behalf of our parents, we were thankfully referred to Mike Manna. We had an extremely helpful call with him (and one of his associates) on 9/13/19. He is obviously deeply expert in the field, and my family and I look forward to working with him in the future.

Met with Mr. Manna regarding adult guardianship. The information he gave me was very informative and helpful .

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
