Charlotte Family Law Firm
Overview
Providing effective resolution to family law issues since 2011, my firm – Barnes Family Law has been serving the people of North Carolina with diligence and commitment since its inception. I, Richard W. Barnes Jr., started my practice in Charlotte to help my clients find a way to move on in their lives and create the future they want for their families. Having a firsthand experience of varied cultures, I have an in-depth understanding of their family structure and the profound impact it has on how they seek resolution.
I proficiently handle a broad spectrum of family law cases, including divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, alimony, asset distribution, same-sex family law and domestic violence. Mindful of the heightened sensitivity of family law cases, I am extremely empathetic and compassionate in my approach. However, I make sure that I do not make decisions for you and instead, help you understand in detail the consequence of each scenario, so that you are empowered to make your own choice.
A native of North Carolina, I have imbibed its culture in full, which has enabled me to understand their problems better and offer fitting solutions. Understanding the role of personality behaviors in these issues has helped me get to the root of the issue. Giving great importance to communication, I have always taken a personal and intimate approach in my professional life that has allowed me to build strong attorney-client relationships throughout my career.
At Barnes Family Law, I provide a safe space for you to open up and share your problems. Domestic violence cases are complex as it has become quite difficult to distinguish the genuine ones from the rest. Verbal, emotional, sexual, psychological and physical abuse constitutes domestic violence, and if you are a victim or a falsely accused perpetrator, I am here to provide my extensive legal support to take on your case and protect you from harm.
Considering the damage a major family decision such as separation can inflict on your personal and professional life, many people refuse to take action even when their well-being is at stake. Allow us to be your partner in this fight so that you can lead your life in peace and pave the way to a promising future. You can avail of our free initial consultation to get legal guidance and we also offer virtual appointments for your convenience.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
