Overview

Lea/Schultz Law Firm, P.C., is a family law firm located in Wilmington, North Carolina. We help clients with a wide range of family law matters, including complex and high-asset divorces, as well as cases involving child support, custody, visitation, alimony and child support payments. Problems involving debtors and creditors, disagreements over contracts and estate planning are among the many types of civil litigation that our firm manages.

James W. Lea, the founder of our litigation firm, has been practicing law for 40 years, with 20 of those years devoted to family law. Partnering with Mr. Lea is attorney Ryan Schultz, who possesses extensive experience in a wide range of legal matters, including estate preparation, criminal defense, civil litigation, commercial litigation and family law.

Our firm has been consistently named to the list of Best Law Firms in America by the U.S. News & World Report. At your initial consultation, our Wilmington divorce lawyers will listen closely to your story, lay out the steps involved and offer advice on how to handle your legal problems in the most effective way possible.

A strong working connection between client and attorney is critical for the successful resolution of complex legal matters such as civil litigation, estate planning or divorce. Because we value the relationship between attorney and client so highly, we limit the number of cases we take on and only accept cases from people we connect with.

Whether negotiating or in court, we are just as assured. If the necessity ever arises, our attorneys can confidently try a case due to their substantial experience in civil litigation and family law.

DO NOT USE THIS OVERPRICED DO NOTHING ATTORNEY. He made promises he didn’t keep and made little if any effort to get a better custody arrangement for my granddaughter. The system sure is messed up in NC!! I’d have given a ZERO rating but unable to.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
