Overview

Joel D. Cavanaugh joined the law firm of HOBSON RASNICK FOX & KOLLIGIAN, LLC, in the summer of 2019. Prior to practicing at HOBSON RASNICK FOX & KOLLIGIAN, LLC, Joel attended the University Akron School of Law, where he graduated summa cum laude and in the top 10% of his class. Upon graduation, Joel began practicing in Cuyahoga County then worked as an Associate at Palecek, McIlvaine, Hoffmann & Morse Co., L.P.A., in Wadsworth, handling a wide array of cases in the areas of Estate Planning, Trust and Estate Administration, Medicaid Planning, Real Estate, and Corporate Law.

Joel’s demeanor and strong suits play perfectly into the areas of law in which he practices. Joel shows an incredible attention to detail and enjoys going the extra mile to ensure that his clients planning goals are met as closely as possible. From an estate-planning perspective, this has proven to be a great benefit to his clients because they know that their Estate plan has been drafted with one eye towards their future and one eye fixed on the present. Joel works with clients at all stages of Estate planning, whether it is simple planning involving a Last Will and Testament and powers of attorney, or be it more complex, such as a revocable or testamentary trust.

These traits have also allowed Joel to be successful in the area of Medicaid Planning. At his prior firm, Joel became immediately involved in the Medicaid Planning practice and quickly developed an expertise in the field enough to take over that practice area. While Medicaid law and the regulations that follow are incredibly difficult to navigate, Joel is able to succinctly and sufficiently explain the dos and don’ts of Medicaid law to help his clients develop a plan to protect most, if not all of their assets. Joel’s Medicaid practice continues on at Hanna Rasnick where he assists clients with Crisis Planning (planning that involves the protection of assets and Medicaid qualification for an individual imminently entering a nursing facility), as well as Pre-Need Planning (planning that occurs well before an individual needs long-term care to shelter excess assets when Medicaid becomes necessary).

Joel is also well-versed in the areas of Trust and Probate Administration. Often times, families can feel overwhelmed when a loved one passes and can be confused as to what steps should be taken to wind up the affairs of their loved one. Joel’s ability to efficiently explain the probate and non-probate process and his ability to assist in the administration of your loved one’s affairs from many different angles, including tax planning, can provide comfort and direction in what can otherwise be a very difficult time. No two Estates or Trusts are the same, and each case brings with it its own set of challenges and issues. Joel has experience in dealing with most issues that arise during the Trust and/or Estate administration process and can help, even in the most difficult situations.

The same traits that allow Joel to excel in the areas of Estate and Medicaid Planning and Trust and Estate Administration also contribute to Joel’s success in the practice areas of Corporate and Real Estate Law. In each case, the client has a set goal or agenda, and Joel is able to work closely with each client and treat each case uniquely enough to work towards reaching each client’s individual needs and/or goals. For Corporate law, Joel is able to assist from the simple end of the spectrum in establishing an LLC, Corporation, and/or Partnership, or he can assist in more complex matters such as business transitions from one generation to another or mergers and acquisitions. The same can be said for Real Estate transactions; Joel is able to assist whether you are merely transferring property to another party or whether you would like to sell or buy your property and need guidance through the selling/buying process.

If you are in need of any of the legal services described above, please do not hesitate to contact Joel Cavanaugh. He is always excited to counsel and advise new clients and truly enjoys discussing legal issues concerning the areas in which he practices.

5.0 out of 5 stars

Had taken over our legal business (estate planning) after the passing of John Rasnick (who was wonderful with us). Did not know what to expect with Joel, who took over Mr. Rasnick's account. We were absolutely at peace with Mr. Cavanaugh! He had already looked at our previous plan and was very well prepared to help us. He made sure he understood what our concerns were. He explained everything in very easily comprehended language. I cannot recommend him enough!!!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
