Overview

Providing Expert Counsel and Representing Clients with Strategy, Curiosity, and Compassion

Corey Kuzma developed an interest in storytelling, composition, case-building, and strategy from a very early age. As a student at Baldwin Wallace University, Corey thought his interests would lead him to film school, but an Introduction to Criminal Law course showed him his passion for methodical organization and compelling storytelling could be better utilized in a career in law.

Corey paid his way through college by managing a local restaurant for nine years, a critical role where he learned how to organize a team, strategize, execute, and meet expectations. While running the restaurant, Corey pursued a double major in political science and philosophy. This education prepared him for law school, teaching him how to theorize, debate, inform, analyze, and, perhaps most importantly, how to listen.

Entering the Legal Field

While attending Cleveland Marshall College of Law, Corey interned at the City of Cleveland Department of Law. The valuable experience he gained while assisting attorneys in the Department of Civil Litigation short-listed him for a position at NRS Injury Law. Corey took the bar in February of 2015, received his diploma in May, and had a job at the firm by July.

Within days of joining the firm, it became clear Corey had a unique ability to provide compassionate counsel for clients one day and then strategically and methodically build an unassailable case for them the next. “Once I started working for NRS Injury Law, I knew without a shadow of a doubt I was in the right place,” reflected Corey. “I was the kind of kid who loved grand strategy and storytelling in movies and books, hoping one day I could write interesting stories or shorts of my own. Now, as an adult, I find myself in a work environment where I apply those same organizational and creative skills to listen intently to clients and build compelling, winning cases for them.”

A Passion for Workers' Compensation Law

To Corey, workers' comp law is especially meaningful and important. “When I was a young child, my uncle lost his leg in a workplace accident, and workers' comp was essential in helping our extended family stay afloat,” says Corey. “That experience helped inspire me to go into worker's comp law, because in this field, you're representing everyday, hardworking people who've been injured in the line of duty, and who are often up against powerful institutions or corporations that don't want them to receive the compensation they need to get treatment, recover, and provide for their families.”

Corey distinguished himself in the firm’s workers’ comp department by listening intently to clients, asking the right questions, taking a vested interest in learning the details of their stories, and building effective cases to represent them. His charismatic nature and calm demeanor quickly made him NRS Injury Law’s go-to attorney for even the most complex and nuanced workers’ comp cases. “When clients come to me with their stories and questions, I like to have answers,” says Corey, reflecting on his role at the firm. “The unknowns of each case are always very interesting to me, which is why I endeavor to learn, learn, and learn as much as possible so I can provide answers while really getting to know my clients. At some point, I feel like I start walking in their shoes. I learn their story as well as they know it, which enables me to get results for them.”

Community Involvement:

Passionate about music, Corey can be found frequenting and supporting the budding music scene in the greater Cleveland area.

Work/Life Balance:

Corey lives in Lakewood with his wife, Emma, and their niece, Regina. Free time is limited, but Corey plays music with his niece, teaches her new instruments, and cultivates her musical interests. Corey takes his family to museums, aquariums, parks, and festivals on weekends and holidays. On the rare “down” day, Corey can be found at home spending time with the family dog and cat or singing karaoke in a jam session with Regina.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
