Overview

Dedicated to Helping Injured Workers Succeed Against Powerful Institutions

Jennifer Lawther always knew she wanted to help people. Her storied career in law has seen her practice in probate, domestic law, estate planning, and workers’ compensation. After clerking for a prestigious firm while in law school and after graduating cum laude from the Cleveland Marshall College of Law with her Juris Doctor in 1996, Jennifer dove into the meaningful work of helping people win their legal cases. Jennifer joined NRS Injury Law in November 2006, and, thanks to her exceptional skill at navigating the nuances and complexities of workers’ comp law to the benefit of her clients, she quickly rose through the ranks to partner.

On a Mission to Help People Overcome Life-changing Workplace Injuries

Most people adapt to life’s many changes, but even the most prepared, cautious individuals can face life-altering workplace injuries and sudden health crises that put workers at a disadvantage physically, mentally, and financially. “Some of the greatest injustices in our country occur when hard working Americans are injured on the job,” says Jennifer, reflecting on why she chose workers’ comp as her focus. “The deck is stacked against them if workers don’t have the right representation. They’re faced with some of the most complex legal codes in Ohio, and they’re up against powerful institutions that will do everything possible to avoid making the injured worker whole again.”

The inherent injustice of injured workers being permanently harmed and not compensated fairly inspired Jennifer to make workers’ compensation her primary legal focus. As a partner, she co-manages NRS Injury Law’s Workers’ Compensation and Litigation Department. In addition to her case docket, Jennifer oversees a team with four other attorneys and five paralegals. “This is where I want to be,” said Jennifer. “My team and I bring the clients in, and we pull up a chair and invite them to be part of the team because that’s the NRS Injury Law way. We’re all in this together. We work together, we share ideas and experiences, and we put empathy for the clients first. That’s how we win.”

A Passion for the David and Goliath Cases

When a particularly challenging workers’ comp case arrives at the firm, it inevitably finds its way to Jennifer’s desk. “Workers’ comp cases are tricky because an injured worker is up against the State of Ohio or a powerful and combative employer or insurance giant who doesn’t want to compensate the worker,” says Jennifer. “But those are the cases I get most excited about. The David and Goliath cases where standing up to a powerful institution and winning the case means helping David beat Goliath.”

Community Involvement:

  • The Miracle League
  • The Cleveland Food Bank

Work/Life Balance:

A “never a dull moment” person, when Jennifer isn’t representing clients in the office or courtroom, she can be found adventuring outdoors or traveling the country. Whether visiting the family cabin on the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania or renewing her vows with her husband in the Great Smoky Mountains or at the beach, Jennifer makes the most of every moment in her career and beyond. On the occasional ‘relax’ day, Jennifer can be found with her husband at their home in Aurora, planning a remodel on one of their rental properties, crafting an itinerary for the next trip, or fulfilling her cherished role as Favorite Auntie.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
