Hired Attorney 2017-2020This man agreed to help my elderly mother collect a judgement she always had against another person. He took 2.5 years to do it. He made little to no contact with my mother. He didn't return calls, he wouldn't see her when she came by, his secretary always said he was at court. She got to the point where she asked the secretary if he was still her attorney anymore! He kept giving her advise in favor of the man who owed my mother the judgement. He asked her to agree to less money and hurry to sign papers so that the plaintiff wasn't inconvenienced. She asked for the man with the judgement to pay attorneys fees and this man "forgot". Now that the judgement is coming in he told my mother " Ill just take my part out and send you the rest" My mother questioned him. How much was his part? Why isn't the other guy paying the fees? After 2.5 years of fighting for information, bad advise and now being asked to allow the attorney to deduct an unknown amount from her judgement before she gets it, she questioned him. She asked how much she owed! He said " I didnt work out an amount yet, but ill be fair" My Mother told him she didnt trust him and wanted to know what he was charging her for when she asked that the other guy pay her attorney fees. When the bill came, this attorney took complete advantage of my Mother. And she had no choice. It was pay him this extraordinary bill or not get her money that she needed. This man is crooked. He preys on vulnerable women. He had more sympathy for the other guy than his own client. In my opinion, he should be disbarred. He is a total disgrace. DO NOT USE THIS MAN!!

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
