Hired Attorney 2019Troy is very good at what he does. He resolved my case more quickly than expected and with all the success for which I was hoping. I cannot in good conscience give 5 stars since there were some hiccups along the way. However, I have never hired this sort of lawyer before; nor do I know personally anyone who has. So perhaps the hiccups with Troy are standard. While I was delighted he offered to handle my case for a flat fee up front, there are two caveats I'd share with potential clients. First, when I asked some honest, but detailed questions about his fees, rather than discuss them with me, he instead responded by suggesting I find a new lawyer. When I contacted him to talk through things we were able to come to an understanding, but potential clients need to know this experience of mine. Second, his flat fee is not all-inclusive. Once my claim was approved I needed to pay him nearly 10% more than I already had. Nevertheless, my overall experience was quite good. I'd recommend him to anyone in southwest Michigan looking to file a private disability claim.

Consulted Attorney 2019I was referred to Troy's office and was impressed from the onset with Kim who initially contacted me. In my experience, an attorney uses the initial phone consult to ascertain as quickly as possible if potential exists to get someone on retainer. The conversation is short and any meaningful advice is withheld until the meter is running. That was not the case with Troy. He spoke with me at length on two different occasions. He really listened. And he genuinely cared. I actually tried to end the conversation the first call out of respect for his time. But, he continued because he wanted me to consider a few more things. Both conversations ended with some advice for the next steps for me to take. And we decided moving forward to engage his services now was not in my best interest. I've never been so impressed with an attorney I actually didn't hire! I'm sure his approach pays big dividends in the long run. He will be my first phone call in the future if needed. And I will recommend him to anyone I know needing help with ERISA, benefits, or disability issues.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
