    Hired Law firm 2020
Absolutely do NOT use this Law Office. The Law Office of Douglas C. Smith had me invest thousands as a retainer in February, and has had poor communication with me and absolutely zero communication with the Oklahoma court my case originated out of. I entrusted Mr. Smith with the safety and future of my children, as well as my peace of mind. According to the El Paso County website, my case was set for dismissal at 0830 this morning due to lack of movement. If you want an attorney who cares and invests the time and energy into your case, he is not it. I am absolutely floored that this happened.

    Hired Law firm 2017-2018
Very disappointing. I must highly not recommend this law firm for contested divorce or if you are in a situation from out of state needing an attorney. The firm leads you to believe that you can't get your case tried in your home state and that they will be working in your best interest. At mediation you find out otherwise..fighing for yourself. There were errors in the divorce decree that was sent to me to sign that I found. When a letter was sent notifying them of this with my list of complaints ...the response was unapologetic and arrogant. They even billed me for the corrections. There fee was rather high for the work or lack of it. ...There was no concern for the client who had to pay for travel, hotel, and food...for this lack of advocacy. I would have liked to think that maybe the firm is inept..but now my opinion is that they simply took the case for the easy money.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
