Hired Attorney 2024I hired attorney Kevin Rundle for my divorce case after my ex-husband contented our previously uncontested divorce done my mail. After our first me hour consultation, I felt like I was retaining someone that would be on my side. What I got was the exact opposite. He was rude, dismissive, and absent. When I challenged him on the way he was treating me as his client, he just explained that he is a very blunt person. There is a difference between being blunt and speaking with candor, and being downright rude and dismissive. He also was completely absent on my case. He turfed everything to his paralegal and when it came time for hearing in my case, he was wholly unprepared and failed to present the strongest arguments in my favor. It felt like he was actually working for opposing counsel. He was also very soft in fighting back and his handling of the perjury and unethical behaviors from both my ex-husband as well as my attorney. He let them get away with anything and everything, with no pushback and it cost me tens of thousands of dollars, before I ultimately fired him and hired someone better equipped for the job. Lastly, anyone looking to retain him should know that he does not appear in court in person, ever. This was not disclosed to me in our consultation. Had I known, I never would have retained him. Imagine sitting at a table without counsel at a divorce trial, across from your spouse and their high powered attorney, while your attorney attends via Zoom. I absolutely should have been informed of this upfront. It is egregious that this was not disclosed. It seems he is well past his Prime and it’s time to hang up his law hat.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
