Hired Law firm 2009-2016My background is bankruptcy law as a paralegal. I worked with an association management company from 2007 to 2016 and handled the bankruptcy records for this company. Prior to Dunlap Gardiner LLP coming on the scene in 2009, the company self managed its bankruptcy cases, with little more than filing claims and used another law office to provide collections. The costs to the communities was very high but that was the best solution at the time. When our firm hired Dunlap Gardiner as their CAI attorney, things changed drastically for the better for the communities being managed. Wes Dunlap and Brian Gardiner are some of the most progressive and innovative attorneys with whom I have ever worked. Their passion for the law was evident in how they often looked outside the box and pushed the envelope to collect for the communities and did so at a much more reasonable rate than had been offered previously. Why is this important? Because collecting past due fees for a community holds costs in check for the members. Association dues are based on what can be collected and being creative in collection benefits all the members in the Community Association. Wes and Brian are definitely an asset to any community in which they serve and offer the highest quality service.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
