    Hired Law firm 2017-2021
I hired him nearly 4 years ago after a motor vehicle accident where I was offered a settlement by the insurance company. Over the years, he has done nothing and the only time I could get him to answer a phone call from me was if I called the law office he shared space with and spoke with the head lawyer or informed him that I was going to contact the bar. I was so sick of dealing with this I told him to just settle. I will end up with $500 more than I would’ve gotten had I not even hired a lawyer. That he made any money on this at all is nauseating. So he received the money over a week ago and informed me 8 days ago that the check was sent out. When it still hadn’t arrived I told him to either send it out certified or I will pick it up on Friday personally. I have no confidence that he even sent it out at all. His answer to this, was that he would inquire with USPS as to the delay… Mind you there was no mention that it was sent out certified or signature requested. Unfortunately for him, I have dealt with some excellent lawyers over the years… He’s definitely not one of them. Steer clear!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
