Glastonbury Criminal Law Firm

Overview

I was not a traditional student. I was licensed by the American Association of Clinical Pathologists as a Medical Laboratory Technician in 1982. I was later licensed as a Medical Laboratory Technologist by the former Connecticut State Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. I was employed by Manchester Memorial Hospital and then Windham Community Memorial Hospital as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (HEW) from 1982 through 1986.

I returned to college and attended Eastern Connecticut State University as a full time student while working full time in the hospital laboratory. I received my Bachelors Degree in Science, magna cum laude, from Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Connecticut in 1986 and went on to law school.

I received my Juris Doctorate from Western New England College School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts, graduating cum laude, in 1989. During law school, I worked as a legal intern with a prominent criminal defense firm in the Rockville section of Vernon, Connecticut. I was trained by lawyers who believed that the practice of law was a privilege and a calling, not just a business. I have conducted myself and developed my law practice accordingly. My firm focuses on Criminal Defense, Civil Rights, and some areas of Personal Injury law including Motor Vehicle Accidents.

The law is always evolving to fit the needs of our changing society, especially in the area of forensic science. Throughout my career I have attended countless seminars all over the country related to the practice of criminal law. I was selected as a Panelist by the Connecticut Bar Association which presented a seminar in November of 2006 entitled "Raising the Bar: A Bench Bar Symposium on Professionalism". I was also selected as a Panelist by the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association in March of 2009 which presented a seminar entitled "Defense of Sexual Assault Cases; Negotiation, Probation, and Registration Issues". I was selected to file the Brief of Amicus Curiae on behalf of the Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association in the State Supreme Court case of State v. Luis Norberto Martinez, (S.C. 18168), in March of 2009 which focuses on the issue of a criminal Defendant's Constitutional right to access any expert witness necessary for an adequate defense, particularly where one is needed to counter expert testimony offered by the State to prosecute the person. No matter how many years of experience I may have in this field I will never stop learning.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
