I sent an e-mail with a retaining wall question and an attorney reached out to me within 24 hours. We set up a time to discuss my concern and he spent half an hour over the phone clarifying my situation and explaining the law. The discussion was very helpful.

Mitchell Brooks is AMAZING!!! The first time I spoke to him I knew I had to have him and Chelsea on my team. He has helped me in so many ways. No matter the issue, time, or situation he always makes me feel like I am his top priority. He gets things done in an ethical and professional manner without wasting any time or money. I can't thank him enough for holding my hand through such an emotional, stressful, heart breaking, and scary time of my life. The whole entire staff is absolutely wonderful. Thank you all so much for everything you do.

We’re a small company in Salt Lake City. We hired Darwin Bingham of Scalley Reading Bates to help us with a collection matter from a debtor located in Arizona. Darwin efficiently and professionally saw it through and we were paid in full. He was knowledgeable, communicative and exercised good judgment. We’d definitely hire Scalley Reading and Darwin again if the need arises.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
