New York Legal Malpractice Law Firm
Overview
Founded in 1990, the Catafago Law Firm, a professional corporation, has experienced rewarding success in its short history. While offering a broad range of services, to date the Firm has focused most intensively on aspects of commercial law - from complex litigation to advice and consultation to structuring business transactions.
We are proud that the Firm has been awarded a distinguished designation by Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, which listed Jacques Catafago as one of the Preeminent Lawyers in America - the publication's highest accolade. This selection was added to the Firm's AV rating, the highest rating available for a law firm's legal ability and expertise and standard of ethics. That AV rating was the result of an extensive, confidential review among other members of the legal profession.
Although the Firm's practice is concentrated in commercial litigation, its experience and knowledge is diverse. For instance, we obtained the largest punitive damage jury verdict to be awarded to a single person, a homeless person, in a Section 1983 Civil Rights Case.
On April 9, 1997, The New York Law Journal reported on its first page a decision in Walker v. Weinstock - a case in which the Firm succeeded in extricating its client from an unconscionable contract with another attorney. The contract provided the over-reaching lawyer with a whopping 80% stake in a $4 million property. The victory - obtained after a protracted trial with hundreds of exhibits and dozens of witnesses - was most gratifying, as it was at least a small effort against the too frequent abuse by our colleagues at the bar. The Judge, in adopting our position, stated that this was "a circumstance which gives rise to the growing public distrust in the legal profession, and must be rooted out wherever possible."
It is the goal of the Catafago Law Firm to maintain the highest of professional standards in its practice at all times, and our mission to eliminate by way of our example such public distrust of the legal profession.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
