Overview
Alan M. Cohen has been practicing law for nearly forty years. A graduate of Clark University (B.A. 1980) and Washington University School of Law (J.D. 1983), Attorney Cohen is a member of the Massachusetts Bar as well as admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts, U.S. Court of Appeals 1st Circuit and U.S. Court of Appeals 5th Circuit. Martindale Hubbell awarded Attorney Cohen with its highest rating – AV. Attorney Cohen is a member of the Commercial Law League of America and the Massachusetts Bar Association. He practices commercial litigation with a focus on commercial debt collection litigation, judgement enforcement, and mechanic's lien enforcement
Unlike others who write often ineffective letters and make time wasting telephone calls, Attorney Cohen takes a more direct approach. He strongly believes that timely and aggressive action is the key to effective debt collection.
Attorney Cohen’s philosophy is simple. Get You Paid! He immediately commences suit, seeking where appropriate, ex parte attachments of your debtor’s bank accounts, real estate or income stream using reach and apply injunctions. When successful, your debtor first learns of Attorney Cohen’s name when its bank tells them that he has attached their account. Attorney Cohen also prepares, perfects, and enforces mechanics liens.
Despite this use of aggressive and effective debt collection techniques, Attorney Cohen acts professionally thereby allowing you the choice of rehabilitating the debtor. Often, even after Attorney Cohen has aggressively collected the monies due to you, your debtor then hires Attorney Cohen to collect its debts!
Representative clients include international companies, national companies, regional companies, and Massachusetts companies which consist of: banks, lenders, lumber yards, plumbing suppliers, HVAC suppliers, electrical suppliers, building material suppliers, drywall suppliers, sand and gravel companies, produce suppliers, meat and poultry suppliers, fish and shellfish suppliers, equipment rental companies, commercial landlords, insulation companies, consultants, accountants and yes, even attorneys, to name but a few.
Attorney Cohen was selected by the National Business Institute to participate in a panel seminar on Collecting Delinquent Debts in Massachusetts and has spoke at many local National Association of Credit Managers meetings. How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
