Overview

Amanda Johnson is an attorney specializing in civil rights and employment litigation. She joined the firm in July 2022.

After graduating from Columbia Law School, Amanda worked as a litigation associate at Proskauer Rose in New York. While there, Amanda was recognized for her extensive pro bono work, which included challenging the constitutionality of a Florida firearms preemption law, advocating for clients at various stages of the criminal justice system, and representing public housing residents in a class action which brought structural reforms to the New York City Housing Authority.

Most recently, Amanda represented California workers at a plaintiff-side employment discrimination firm.

During her time at Columbia Law School, Amanda served as Executive Articles editor of the Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual and published a Note in the Columbia Human Rights Law Review. Through the Columbia's Advanced Federal Prison Litigation Clinic, Amanda helped secure a court ruling that led to her client's release after nearly 35 years in prison and represented a death row inmate challenging his conditions of confinement.

Amanda's public interest law experience has included roles with the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Access to Justice, civil rights firm Loevy & Loevy, and the Employment Law Unit of the Legal Aid Society of New York. Amanda also served on the Civil Rights Committee of the New York City Bar Association.

Before law school, Amanda worked at the ACLU of New Mexico, where she helped organize a statewide marriage equality campaign and lobbied the state legislature for stronger civil rights laws.

Amanda received her bachelor's degree from Tufts University

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
