Updated: 04/26/2021

Overview

Brett is a 2003 graduate of The University of Chicago Law School. Prior to law school, Brett earned a B.B.A. in Finance from the Henry B. Tippie College of Business, at the University of Iowa.

Philosophically, Brett is a strong believer in equal justice. However, Brett is also a strong believer in applying his skills for the benefit of individuals. This belief lies in the notion that it is oftentimes difficult for individuals to obtain high quality representation, but most corporations will always find great lawyers because they can afford it. Brett is optimistic that by following the above philosophy, he will be able to help level the playing field for the benefit of the underdog.

Brett's practice focuses upon cases involving catastrophic injury (gas explosions, electrocutions and cases involving paralysis or serious head trauma), product liability, insurance bad faith, transportation accidents, including automobile and train accidents, premises liability, as well as general personal injury litigation involving negligence.

Brett is admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa, the State of Illinois, the United States Federal Court for the Northern District of Iowa, the United States Federal Court for the Southern District of Iowa and the United States Federal Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He has also been admitted pro hac vice to practice in the State of Nebraska. In recent months, Brett has handled cases in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New York, Colorado and Florida.

In his free time, Brett expresses his love for the Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears by supporting his teams in person as often as possible. He also enjoys playing golf, basketball and softball, and likes bowling and snow skiing. Brett also is a fan of motorsports.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
