Douglas F. Behm
Scottsdale Litigation Lawyer
Overview
Mr. Behm has practiced law for more than 35 years. He has extensive trial and appellate court experience. Based in the Phoenix-Scottsdale metropolitan area, he represents clients in complex civil litigation, white collar criminal defense, and corporate compliance throughout the Southwest.
Mr. Behm began his career as an assistant district attorney in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York. He then served as senior trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice Organized Crime and Racketeering Section in New York City for more than nine years, where he prosecuted high profile cases involving criminal RICO, labor racketeering, tax evasion, narcotics trafficking, securities fraud, and official corruption.
Since leaving the government in 1987, Mr. Behm has been a partner in two national law firms, with a five year period as a sole practitioner in between. In his last firm, he was chairman of the litigation department, which included more than 50 attorneys. During his private practice career he has defended corporations, public officials, corporate officers, and individuals in complicated criminal matters; conducted corporate internal investigations; and defended and prosecuted complex civil litigation, including breach of contract, securities fraud, civil RICO, breach of fiduciary duty, and intellectual property cases.
Mr. Behm decided to resume his solo practice in 2008 because he believes it allows him to provide his clients with more personal, more efficient, and more effective representation than was possible in a large law firm. Furthermore, the unusual breadth of both his civil and criminal law experiences gives him exceptional insight into complex civil litigation, regulatory investigations, and criminal cases.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
