Edward Lopez Attorney at Law
Hollywood Criminal Law Lawyer
Overview
People often ask me "How can you defend someone knowing they are guilty?" My response always is that not everyone is guilty of what they have been arrested for, and I am a believer in the constitution and the rights of the accused. I also know that bad things happen to good people.
Regardless of your background or past history being arrested is a stressful and traumatic event. You face the loss of freedom and being branded a convicted criminal. I have dedicated my law career to defending people accused of crimes because I understand that bad things do indeed happen to good people. Everyone accused of a crime has a loved one that will suffer if they go to jail and are even convicted of the crime. A spouse, child, other loved one, and the accused themselves suffer when they are arrested and accused of a crime.
I am a believer in the principle that the government’s power must be subject to a system where guilt must be proven. In that sense, it makes it even less likely that an innocent person will ever be convicted for a crime they did not commit. "It is better that ten guilty person go free then one innocent person suffer" are the words the English jurist William Blackstone in his infinite wisdom uttered in 1765. Those words are true as everyone is entitled to a dedicated and zealous defense when they are accused of a crime. It’s what makes our system the best system in the world as every accused person is treated the same with the assurance that the government must prove their guilt "beyond a reasonable doubt", and it is the government that has this complete and total burden. When the government's power is put to the test it makes even less likely that an innocent person will unjustly be found guilty and go to jail.
I gained my trial and courtroom experience first as a public defender before opening my private practice. I have gone to jury trials and obtained Not Guilty verdicts in cases ranging from DUI to life felonies like Armed Robbery. Whether a misdemeanor or serious felony like Murder I have the experience necessary to protect your interests and obtain the best result for you. All my clients get a lawyer that will personally handle their case like they were a family member.
I am a trial attorney, member of the Florida Bar, and a Board Certified Specialist (B.C.S.) in Criminal Trial Law. I am also a member of the United States Southern District Court of Florida Bar. Whether you need an attorney to go to trial or work out the best plea bargain for you I am the attorney you want working for you. I work hard and get results. I look forward to being your attorney.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
