Kirkland Child Custody Lawyer
Overview
Elizabeth (Liz) A. Hoffman assists clients in resolving difficult and oftentimes emotional disputes while successfully navigating them through complex procedures or litigation. She approaches cases by informing and empowering her clients to achieve the best possible outcome.
Liz provides clients with the empathy, professionalism and compassion required for sensitive family law matters. She identifies each client's goals and gives them honest, practical advice on how to achieve them.
"There is no such thing as a large or small problem for a client—all issues are important and urgent to them because their lives are drastically changing," says Liz. "While I advise on all types of complex family law situations, I also recognize that the assistance with which I may provide my clients on smaller, day to day issues can make their lives a little less stressful."
Her commitment to excellence in family law began in law school, where she graduated cum laude from Seattle University School of Law. Liz has represented clients in Seattle, King County and across Washington State on uncontested adoptions, divorces and difficult child custody matters. She has effectively advocated for individuals from a multitude of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
Liz is currently serving as the mentor for the King County Bar Association Family Law Mentor program. She provides training, support, and advice to a group of attorneys who are new to family law, and who have volunteered to provide direct representation to low-income persons involved in a family law matter where a child is at risk. Many of these clients are victims of domestic violence.
"I am committed to being a resource not only to my clients, but to the community at large," says Liz. "Particularly in the areas of domestic violence advocacy and the welfare of children."
Liz has written on a wide variety of family law topics, including a recent seven-part series in which she discussed the court's interpretation of best interests of the child standard and several articles on de facto parentage.
In her spare time Liz enjoys hot yoga, creating elaborate meals, and appreciating friends and family—especially those adventurous enough to sample her cuisine.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
