Mr. Willis received his Bachelor Science from the University of Virginia in 1992 with a major in Commerce. He then attended the highly-regarded University of Georgia School of Law where he received his law degree in 1996.
Through his membership in legal organizations, such as the National College of DUI Defense, Georgia Defense of Drinking Driver's Group, NACDL, and GACDL, Mr. Willis stays on the cutting edge of DUI defense. It was through the National College of DUI Defense that he was able to attend and complete the 2011 Mastering Scientific Evidence Seminar-the most technical and highest-level seminar in the country. Mr. Willis also mastered the Drug Recognition Expert Overview Course.
The key to winning a drunk-driving case is to have a greater knowledge of the evidence than the prosecution. Mr. Willis is not only certified to operate the Intoxilyzer 5000-the breathalyzer used by Georgia law enforcement agencies-he has also taken numerous courses to understand the science behind the machine and how it operates. This education allows him to challenge the results of the breathalyzer test.
Field sobriety tests also play a large part in DUI cases. Mr. Willis has trained as both a student and an instructor on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standardized field sobriety evaluations.
Because of his expertise on the topic, Mr. Willis has been invited to speak at many CLE conferences to train other attorneys how to successfully defend DUI cases. He has also spoken on the topic of analyzing drunk-driving cases for trial as well as handling administrative license suspensions.
Mr. Willis is completely dedicated to his clients. Once, when a key witness was unable to appear in court, he sought to postpone the trial until the witness would be available to testify for his client. The judge refused to wait. Rather than proceed with the trial against his client, Mr. Willis spent four days behind bars for contempt of court. When he was released, Mr. Willis returned to court - with the witness now available - and won his client's case.
Thanks to his high quality of work, Mr. Willis has been named Super Lawyers Rising Star in multiple years for DUI defense.
