On November 7, 2017, Jacob was elected Mayor of Minneapolis. Jacob is a true champion of our city, working tirelessly to further social and economic progress for its residents and businesses alike. Jacob comes into his new role after he was elected to the Minneapolis City Council in 2013, representing the city's Third Ward, which includes downtown Minneapolis, Dinkytown on the University of Minnesota campus, and the burgeoning North Loop. He is Of Counsel to Halunen Law, but not currently employed at the firm.
A cum laude graduate of Villanova School of Law, Jacob focused his legal career on individual and class employment cases, including discrimination, retaliation, and whistleblower actions. He previously was a trial lawyer at a large law firm where he became familiar with the workings of fortune 500 companies and also represented death row inmates and tenants facing homelessness. He has successfully litigated complex, high profile cases and has achieved positive results for clients against formidable opponents.
As a former professional distance runner, and member of Team USA, Jacob brings a tremendous work ethic to whatever he does. His passion for serving the underrepresented and those treated unfairly to are readily apparent in his work on the City Council. As the first annual recipient of the City of Minneapolis Martin Luther King Jr. award, Jacob has repeatedly shown the ability to have a positive impact on the diverse communities he serves.
