Harrington Brewster Mahoney Smits, P.C.
Overview
Joshua (Josh) C. Sauerhas represented clients in various types of domestic relations cases since 2003. In 2023, Josh joined Harrington Brewster Mahoney Smits, P.C., as of counsel to expand on his desire to emphasize various forms of alternative dispute resolution without compromising his capacity to litigate cases when necessary. Throughout his career, Josh successfully litigated many complicated and contentious marriage dissolutions and similar disputes when the possibility to achieve an out-of-court settlement proved infeasible.
Josh recognizes that a dissolution of marriage and similar domestic legal disputes are highly emotional and fraught with negative consequences for families. Josh works hard to reduce the contention and hostility in family law cases, without backing off his clients’ important objectives and desires for their case.
Josh has successfully represented hundreds of clients through a difficult time in their lives to achieve positive results for them. Josh’s proven approach is to listen to the needs and goals of his clients, and then pursue those goals as if they were his own. Every family is different, each with its own unique needs and characteristics. Josh receives consistent feedback from his clients acknowledging his commitment to their case and that they have been reassured by his guidance through each step of the legal process.
Josh is also committed to reducing the negative impact of domestic relations disagreements on the parties and their children. Accordingly, Josh is also available to serve as a neutral third party for cases requiring a skilled practitioner to facilitate mediation or arbitration where the parties already have counsel or one or both have chosen to proceed without counsel. Similarly, Josh is available to serve as a Parenting Coordinator and/or Decision Maker in cases where those services are necessary and appropriate.
Josh was born in Fort Collins, Colorado and grew up on a family farm just outside of Loveland, Colorado, where he learned to appreciate the value and importance of hard work and self-motivation. Josh’s three brothers and one sister and two outstanding parents have contributed to Josh’s decision to practice family law, and represent clients in an effort to empower them to move forward with a family structure that will keep their children in a thriving environment. A divorce does not need to mean any less of a quality and loving environment for children.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
