Overview
In her employment law practice, KrisAnn provides employers with legal counsel involving a variety of workplace and business-related issues, including general employee and operational management; board and executive leadership training; employment policies and handbook reviews; discrimination and retaliation issues; whistleblower issues; wage and hour law compliance; hiring and termination; neutral investigations; employment and vendor contract reviews; separation and settlement agreements; confidentiality agreements; unemployment benefits hearings; Department of Labor and OSHA investigations and audits; and employee benefits in compliance with the Employee Retirement Income and Security Act ("ERISA").
KrisAnn also works in education law offering general advice and counsel to school districts and universities. She works closely with clients to ensure state and federal law compliance and to provide assistance in policy development and revision; policy implementation; legislative changes; internal investigations; special education processes; student and employee discipline; contract negotiations; contract non-renewals; and discharges. Education law is a natural fit for KrisAnn because in addition to her legal practice, KrisAnn has worked at a variety of universities as a professor. She studied in both M.A. and Ph.D. programs, specializing in English and Law and Literature studies. She has taught legal research and writing, moot court, employment law, practical writing, composition, and other courses at the University of Minnesota Law School, Hamline University, Kent State University, North Dakota State University, the University of Mary, and Bismarck State College.
As a frequent lecturer on a wide variety of employment and education law topics, KrisAnn also offers legal compliance training to business owners, executives, administrators, HR professionals, and governing boards. KrisAnn is a co-editor of the North Dakota Employment Law Letter, is the North Dakota contributor to the 50 Employment Laws in 50 States publication, and is a frequent author in the North Dakota Physician magazine.
Prior to joining the Vogel Law Firm in 2015, KrisAnn practiced in the Twin Cities at Hellmuth & Johnson (Edina, MN) and Mansfield Tanick & Cohen (Minneapolis, MN). She obtained a J.D. from Hamline University School of Law, where she was active on Law Review, the National Moot Court
team, and the Alternative Dispute Resolution program, earning certification in mediation and arbitration from the nationally-ranked Dispute Resolution Institute; Ph.D./ABD from Kent State University; M.A. from North Dakota State University; B.A. from Minnesota State University Moorhead; and A.A. from Minot State University-Bottineau, where she played college basketball.
KrisAnn lives in Bismarck with her husband and their three children.
