Prior to forming Reeves Maxwell, Kristina spent three years with the Arizona Attorney General's Office in the Capital Litigation Section. In this position, Kristina handled all stages of capital appellate litigation, including direct appeals, post-conviction relief proceedings, and habeas petitions. Kristina prepared hundreds of briefs, and argued numerous cases before the Arizona Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit of Appeals, winning all of her cases before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, even though in every case, the State was the appellant. In one of her cases, Kristina persuaded a unanimous panel to accept jurisdiction in an appeal under the collateral order doctrine, and to vacate two orders of the district court. In another case, she persuaded a unanimous panel of the court to reinstate a death sentence that had been set aside by the district court.
Kristina joined the Attorney General's Office after retiring from a successful career in the U.S. Navy. While on active duty, Kristina was hand selected from among all JAG officers of all services to serve as the Chief of Staff to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense, the senior legal advisor to the Secretary of Defense. While at the Pentagon, Kristina worked on some of the most high profile and challenging legal issues facing the Department of Defense, including drafting the rules for the trial of detainees in the War on Terror and providing legal advice on high profile and dangerous missions carried out by members of the Department of Defense. While on active duty, Kristina also served a tour as a trial prosecutor and as an appellate defense counsel. As an appellate defense counsel, Kristina represented sailors and Marines who had been convicted at court-martial, on their appeals to the Navy-Marine Court of Criminal Appeals and Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. In this role, Kristina successfully handled hundreds of briefs and numerous oral arguments, and achieved relief for her clients in over 25% of her cases.
Kristina graduated from University of Chicago Law, the law school ranked as the best law school in the country. At University of Chicago, Kristina learned from professors such as President Barack Obama, and Judges Diane Wood, Frank Easterbrook, and Richard Posner, judges of the Seventh Circuit of Appeals. Prior to law school, Kristina obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from University of California, Los Angeles.
Before graduating law school and joining the JAG Corps, Kristina spent the first few years of her military career aboard ships as a Surface Warfare Officer. Kristina led a large division of sailors, deployed to the Middle East, and participated in military actions against Iraq.Office Information
