Mr. Shea is a pioneer in helping clients forecast, control and contain litigation costs. He is the managing partner of the firm and is listed in the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. His practice emphasizes the strategic management of litigation, as well as serving as trial counsel in high exposure cases. Other primary focus areas include insurance coverage and bad faith, environmental and toxic tort litigation, and products liability with an emphasis on mass tort and class action litigation.
Mr. Shea is the coordinating counsel for the Northridge earthquake and toxic litigation for the third largest property and casualty insurance carrier in the United States. He also coordinates litigation for California wildfire and National Mold claims. In this capacity, Mr. Shea collaborates with the firm's clients in the strategic planning, financial budgeting, and forecasting of litigation exposures. He serves as the lead counsel for the client before the court and leads a team of outside counsel responsible for the defense of over 1,000 pending suits. Previous to this role, Mr. Shea was also involved in the coordination of the California Chromium VI environmental litigation against a Fortune 500 chemical manufacturer, as a member of the trial team, and as lead settlement negotiator and strategist in over 2,400 pending cases.
While leading the legal strategy for these mass tort situations, Mr. Shea identified a critical need to effectively manage all aspects of litigation, from financial projections and metrics, to technology for discovery support. His commitment to the strategic management of litigation led him to found two emerging growth companies: LitNeutral and MedNeutral. Both provide transparent and credible processes to manage all aspects of dispute resolution.
These patent-pending, groundbreaking methodologies hold the potential for transforming traditional litigation. For example, LitNeutral creates incentives for lawyers to protect, quantify and advocate for the efficient resolution of complex disputes. The result is enormous savings of money and human capital.
In addition, Mr. Shea frequently serves as counsel to the insurance industry in 17200 and class action litigation on a variety of institutional issues.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
