Matt was born in Michigan City, Indiana, and is a proud graduate of Michigan City High School. In 2005, Matt graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Studies. While at Ball State, Matt won a school-wide mock trial tournament and was named to the dean's list seven times. In 2009, Matt graduated from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law, where he was named to the Order of the Barristers, was a Sacopulos Tax Award recipient, and twice competed in the Midwest Regional of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.
During law school, Matt also co-authored a survey of recent developments to Indiana tax law in the 2009 issue of the Indiana Law Review.
Prior to co-founding Black Clay LLC, Matt worked in the tax litigation section for former Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter, where he appeared on behalf of the state of Indiana in the Indiana Tax Court as a certified legal intern. Matt then spent three years as a Deputy Attorney General in the civil litigation section for current Indiana Attorney General, Greg Zoeller. During his time as a Deputy Attorney General, Matt represented many elected and appointed state officials, agencies, and employees in both state and federal court. As a Deputy Attorney General, Matt managed a large and diverse caseload including the following: tax disputes, auto accidents, IOSHA violations, involuntary mental health commitments, civil rights claims, employment discrimination claims, environmental violations, fire and building safety code regulations, and requests for restricted driving privileges under state motor vehicle law. Matt also regularly brought civil enforcement actions against individuals and entities for violations of state securities law.
In addition to his years of public service, Matt has also worked in private practice, primarily in Chicago and Northwest Indiana, representing insurance companies and other corporate clients in matters concerning tort and products liability.
Matt has been licensed to practice in all of the state trial and appellate courts of Indiana, as well as the federal district courts of Indiana since 2009. Matt was also admitted to practice in the state of Illinois in 2010.
