Mr. Ortega is actively involved in the representation of clients in virtually all areas of environmental law, including litigation and negotiations with regulatory agencies at all governmental levels and at administrative hearings. His extensive experience allows him to effectively represent individuals, municipalities and business organizations from a sole proprietorship to a Fortune 500 company. Mr. Ortega has participated in every aspect of litigation practice and has had involvement in significant cases in the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court. His practice also includes municipal waste and wastewater service; permitting; environmental audits and compliance reviews; hazardous waste; representation of buyers, sellers and lenders; and insurance matters.
Mr. Ortega is a member of the Kalamazoo County Bar Association, the Grand Rapids Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan and is an active member of the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, serving on the Environmental Law Council and as the past Chair of the Solid and Hazardous Waste/Insurance Committee as well as a member of the Superfund and Groundwater/Surface Water Committees. He is also a member of the Natural Resources Law and Litigation Sections of the American Bar Association.
Mr. Ortega has served on the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties, 1986-91; Chair of the Special Events Committee 1989-1990; Kalamazoo County Chamber of Commerce, Environmental Sub-Committee, 1994-current; and the City of Kalamazoo Brownfield Redevelopment Initiative Technical Committee, 1995-1996 and 2002.
