Paul Sugarman is founder of the firm and continues as leader and mentor to the firm’s attorneys. Paul’s caseload includes a wide variety of civil litigation matters including medical and professional liability, products liability, construction site and aviation accident litigation, and administrative proceedings before professional and licensing boards. He also serves as mediator on request of parties seeking dispute resolution. Paul graduated cum laude from Boston University School of Law in 1954. While in law school, he was Associate Editor of the Boston University Law Review from 1952 to 1954. He was admitted to practice in Massachusetts in 1954, before the U. S. Court of Military Appeals in 1955, and before the United States Supreme Court in 1965. He served as a Captain in the JAGC of the United States Army between 1955 and 1958. After military service, he began his practice in Boston and for over 30 years has represented clients in the most sophisticated, complex, high-profile litigation in Massachusetts. He has served in both local and national bar associations, and received numerous awards and honors. Paul’s work with the Massachusetts Bar Association has included service as President between 1976 and 1977, Vice-President between 1973 and 1975, and as President-Elect between 1975 and 1976, membership on the board of Delegates from 1970-1973, chairmanship of the Committee on Legislation from 1973-1974, of the Committee on Trial Practice from 1973-1974, of the Committee on Administration of Justice from 1974-1975, of the Committee on Court Reform from 1975- 1976, Legal Chairman of the Joint Committee of the Massachusetts Bar Association-Massachusetts Medical Society from 1982-1984, Co-Chairman, Committee on Medical Malpractice from 1985-1986, and Chairman of the Committee on Recall of Retired Judges from 1982-1986. He was Trustee of the Massachusetts Bar Foundation from 1980 to 1981 and President of the Boston University School of Law Alumni Association for 1979 to 1980. Paul has also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America from 1966 to 1968 and President of the Massachusetts Chapter from 1968 to 1970. He has been a member of the Board of Governors of the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys from 1979 to the present. In public service, Paul served on the Attorney General’s Highway Law Study Commission in 1965 and on the Governor’s Select Committee on Judicial Needs from 1976 to 1977. He was a member of the Board of Bar Overseers from 1984 to 1988 and its Chairman from 1985 to 1988. In 1990, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court appointed Paul as Special Master and Commissioner to investigate alleged improprieties in the Boston Municipal Court. Paul was Dean and Professor of Law at Suffolk University Law School between 1990 and 1994, rejoining Sugarman and Sugarman, P. C. after his term as Dean. Paul has received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Suffolk University in 1989. He received the Law Week Award in 1954, the Courageous Advocacy Award from the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys in 1984, the William O. Douglas First Amendment Freedom Award from the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith in 1986, the Silver Shingle Alumni Award for distinguished service to the profession from Boston University School of Law in 1989, the Gold Medal Award from the Massachusetts Bar Association, the American ORT Federation Jurisprudence Award in 1999 and the Civil Justice Award from the American Board of Trial Advocates in 1993. Paul frequently lectures for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, the Massachusetts Bar Association, New England Law Institute and other continuing legal education forums. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, American Bar Foundation, Massachusetts Bar Foundation, and International Society of Barristers and an Advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocates.
