Overview
Raymond E. Oster is a partner with the law firm of FAHRENDORF, VILORIA, OLIPHANT & OSTER L.L.P. Mr. Oster is a Certified Family Law Specialist. Mr. Oster was the first associate hired by the firm in 1999 and became a partner in 2004.
Before joining the firm, Mr. Oster was a law clerk in his hometown of Carson City, Nevada, for the Honorable Michael E. Fondi and Michael R. Griffin.
Mr. Oster was a Deputy District Attorney in Carson City, Nevada, where he was lead counsel in various felony jury trials and represented the State of Nevada in appeals to the Nevada Supreme Court.
Mr. Oster is a member of the Nevada State Bar and licensed to practice law in all courts in the State of Nevada. He graduated with distinction in 1993 from the University of Nevada, Reno, and from Gonzaga University School of Law, cum laude, in 1996.
In 2006, the State Bar of Nevada became a certifying organization for attorneys to be recognized as Certified Family Law Specialists. In its inaugural year, Mr. Oster was the only person statewide to successfully complete the State Bar’s application and testing procedure.
In 2009, Mr. Oster became a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (hereinafter "AAML"), the nation’s most prestigious and well-recognized organization of family law lawyers. Membership in the AAML is restricted to those lawyers who have demonstrated knowledge, experience, and ability in family law matters. Mr. Oster was the first person to pass both the State Bar of Nevada and the AAML tests regarding family law in the State of Nevada.
Besides being recognized as a specialist and AAML fellow, Mr. Oster's extensive experience in family law has been recognized by the judiciary and his peers as follows:
- The Nevada Supreme Court appointed him to the committee to develop special discovery rules for family law. This Committee developed Nevada Rules of Civil Procedure 16.2 and 16.21.
- Mr. Oster drafted the Amicus Curiae Brief for the State Bar of Nevada in Rivero v. Rivero, 195 P.3d 328 (2008), and co-authored another amicus brief in the Petition for Rehearing that resulted in Rivero v. Rivero, 125 Nev. Advance Opinion 34 (August 27, 2009). Rivero is a landmark decision that defines the different types of child custody and proper method for calculation of child support.
- In 2004, Mr. Oster's peers elected him a member of the State Bar Family Law Executive Council until his term expired in 2012. From 2007 through 2009, Mr. Oster served as Vice-Chair for the Executive Council. From 2009 through 2011, he was the Chairperson of the Council.
- The State Bar appointed Mr. Oster to the Northern Nevada Fee Dispute Arbitration Committee.
- Mr. Oster was a member of the State Bar's subcommittee that drafted the requirements for Family Law Specialization. Since 2009, he has served as Chair of the subcommittee that reviews and approves attorney's applications for family law specialization.
- In 2011, the State Bar of Nevada appointed Mr.Oster as a special member of the Judicial Selection Committee to select three names for the Governor's appointment of a Family Court Judge.
- Mr. Oster has lectured on family law at the Annual Family Law Conference, Nevada State Bar Convention, CASA training, and other Continuing Legal Education Courses.
