Bob received his B.A. degree in Journalism in 1979 and his J.D. from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1983. He began his law practice in 1983 with Pierce Couch Hendrickson Johnston & Baysinger, a long time Oklahoma City insurance defense firm, after working during law school as a legal intern with the firm. In 1989, he joined Derryberry, Quigley, Solomon & Blankenship (now Derryberry & Naifeh, LLP), becoming a partner in the law firm in 1992.
His extensive experience includes the representation of insurers in coverage litigation in both state and federal courts. He has served as lead counsel for insurers in numerous cases involving coverage disputes under general liability, commercial automobile, professional liability, and directors and officers policies. His court cases have involved a broad range of insurance issues, including coverage for construction, environmental, professional liability, and uninsured/underinsured motorist claims, resulting in several significant state and federal court decisions. His expertise also includes insurance insolvency and guaranty association law. He serves as general counsel/coverage counsel to the Oklahoma Property and Casualty Insurance Guaranty Association, a position he has held since 1989.
Bob is admitted to practice before all trial and appellate courts of the state of Oklahoma, all federal district courts in Oklahoma, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He is a member of the Oklahoma County Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, and Oklahoma Association of Defense Counsel (Vice-President 2005; Board of Directors 2006-2009), and the Federal Bar Association.
Since 1994, Bob has held an AV-Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. In 2015, he was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel (ACC), the preeminent association of United States and Canadian lawyers who represent the interest of insurers and policyholders.
Bob has lectured on insurance-related topics for the National Business Institute, Mealey’s on Insurance, the National Conference of Insurance Guaranty Funds, and the Oklahoma Association of Defense Counsel.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
