Samantha Funt serves as a senior legal counsel at Mitchell & Shapiro and is dedicated to zealous advocacy on behalf of her clients. As an experienced litigator, Ms. Funt practices personal injury, medical malpractice and general commercial litigation. In addition, Ms. Funt maintains a civil rights practice, representing individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government actors.
Ms. Funt began her career as an assistant public defender with the Miami-Dade County Public Defender’s Office where she represented hundreds of clients in juvenile, domestic violence and felony courts. She has litigated criminal charges ranging from misdemeanors to life felonies including drug trafficking, sexual battery, aggravated battery, and robbery. Ms. Funt has tried nearly 25 jury trials and has litigated constitutional and evidentiary motions in county and circuit courts. She fought against excessive and illegal uses of force, unconstitutional arrests, and police and prison abuses including collaborating with the ACLU to pursue conditions reform for a mentally ill intersex client who was being held in solitary confinement. Ms. Funt passionately brings these experiences to her work at Mitchell & Shapiro, fighting for those whose rights have been violated by law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
Prior to joining Mitchell & Shapiro, Ms. Funt also spent years litigating in a large national law firm where she handled an expansive caseload in state and federal courts and represented domestic and international clients in areas including commercial litigation, intellectual property rights, premises liability, negligent security, construction defects and products liability.
Ms. Funt is a graduate of the George Washington University Law School where she served as a GW Writing Fellow, Vice President of the GW Mock Trial Board, and as a student attorney for the GW Public Justice Advocacy Clinic, representing low-income clients in unemployment compensation appeals and wage hour claims before the D.C. Office of Administrative Hearings and the D.C. Superior Court. She also interned at the United States Department of Justice, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., and served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Patrick Michael Duffy in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.
With a degree in music performance from Emory University, Ms. Funt continues her passion for classical music as a cellist in community orchestras.
