I’ve been practicing law since 1995, when I earned my J.D. from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in Cleveland, Ohio. During my studies, I spent a year as a visiting student at the University of North Dakota School of Law.
Before opening Barron Law Firm in 2012, I worked in a number of other positions: Associate Attorney at Pearson, Christensen, and Clapp in Grand Forks, North Dakota; Clinical Instructor and Visiting Professor in the Clinical Education Program at the University of North Dakota School of Law; Staff Attorney for the Northeast Central Judicial District in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Assistant Polk County (Minnesota) Attorney.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, I taught English at Illinois State University, Ohio State University, and Cleveland State University. I received a Ph. D. In English Literature from The Ohio State University in 1982 and a B.A. in Literature from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1975.
I am a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar Association of North Dakota, the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association, and the Randy H. Lee American Inn of Court. I currently serve as a member of the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of North Dakota. Previously I served as President of the Randy H. I am married to John Madden, a retired University of North Dakota Professor. I have two adult children and three grandchildren. In my spare time I enjoy reading, audiobooks, music, and petting my cats and walking my dog.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
