Shawn Seliger has dedicated most of his life to helping others. He's worked hard all his life for the people and causes that he cared about to preserve our treasured freedoms and liberty. He has relied on deep inner strengths to empower those who have crossed his path throughout his lifetime who needed steady guidance through very difficult personal struggles.
The Law Offices of Shawn Seliger was founded to serve individuals in Southwest Florida who are facing family and personal challenges, financial hardships of foreclosure, landlord/tenant issues or criminal charges. Hiring an experienced lawyer who has been in the trenches helping so many others for years is your best defense to life's legal and personal challenges.
Shawn Seliger graduated from the University of California - Davis with an A.B. in Political Science in 1993. Before pursuing a career in law, he served as an inner city high school teacher at George Washington Preparatory High School in South Central Los Angeles. While there, he made a difference in the lives of many disadvantaged students. He formed a student court that taught inner city children the positive aspects of our judicial system, served as an Impact Drug and Alcohol Counselor, and worked closely with members of the California Department of Corrections to promote prevention of juvenile crime and substance abuse.
Ready to pursue a career in law, Shawn graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2001, where he excelled in legal debate and won high honors in the John J. Gibbons National Criminal Procedure Moot Court Competition at Seton Hall University in 2001. While in law school, he served as a research assistant for family law Professor Rebecca J. O'Neill and as a judicial clerk to the Honorable Paul S. Murphy, First Judicial Circuit of Illinois.
Following law school, Shawn served as a Certified Legal Intern and then as an Assistant State Attorney. From 2003 to 2005, he served as an Assistant Public Defender in both Charlotte and Lee Counties for over two years. Prior to founding the Law Offices of Shawn Seliger, Mr. Seliger was in private legal practice for over five years at another private law firm in Fort Myers, Florida.
Today, Shawn Seliger concentrates his legal practice in the areas of family and marital law, real estate law and criminal defense. Shawn is also very actively involved in numerous civic and legal organizations, generously giving to help his community and make it an even greater place to live.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level
- - Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials
- - How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost
- - How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City
- - Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
