Established in 1968 as the Joe Johnston Law Firm, today we're a regional practice serving the needs of clients from Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and other central and eastern Iowa communities. Our firm holds the AV Preeminent* rating under Martindale-Hubbell's peer review rating system. We emphasize finding prompt, complete and cost-effective solutions to the kinds of problems that many families, individuals and small businesses are likely to encounter at one time or another: an OWI arrest, a divorce, a car accident, or financial pressures such as mortgage foreclosure or wage garnishment.

As experienced courtroom attorneys, we know how to investigate the facts of a situation in order to assess the merits of your case, develop essential negotiating leverage, and present your case to a judge or jury if a satisfactory result cannot be obtained through settlement. At the same time, we know how to anticipate and protect continuing and long-term interests in divorce, bankruptcy or criminal defense while dealing with the immediate legal challenges you're facing.

The determination of the need for legal services and the choice of a lawyer are extremely important decisions and should not be based solely upon advertisements, certification, specialization or self-proclaimed expertise. A description or indication of limitation of practice does not mean that any agency or board has certified such lawyers as specialist or expert in an indicated field of law practice, nor does it mean that such lawyer is necessarily any more expert or competent than any other lawyer. All potential clients are urged to make their own independent investigation and evaluation of any lawyer being considered. These disclosures are required by the Supreme Court of Iowa.

Persons accessing this site are encouraged to seek independent counsel for advice regarding their individual legal issues.

*AV Preeminent and BV Distinguished are certification marks of Reed Elsevier Properties Inc., used in accordance with the Martindale-Hubbell certification procedures, standards and policies. Martindale-Hubbell is the facilitator of a peer review rating process. Ratings reflect the confidential opinions of members of the bar and the judiciary. Martindale-Hubbell ratings fall into two categories: legal ability and general ethical standards.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
